The University of Oxford has set ambitious targets in its Environmental Sustainability Strategy to achieve net zero carbon and net biodiversity gain by 2035. The University of Oxford Botanic Garden and Arboretum (OBGA) is committed to support this policy, its values, and its principles. Care for the environment is one of our key responsibilities and an important part of the way in which we operate as a department of the University.
At OBGA, we are committed to reducing our environmental impact, championing sustainability, restoring nature, and preserving global biodiversity through research, conservation and education. As we reflect on our 400-year history, we are also duty-bound to prepare for the future. Plants hold many of the solutions to the challenges faced by our planet, yet often go overlooked. Our mission is to share the scientific wonder of plants with the world.
We recognise that we must operate as sustainably as possible and work to protect global biodiversity. Due to the nature of our work, the conservation of biodiversity and use of sustainable working practises have long been part of our usual operating procedures, from working towards peat-free horticulture, to re-establishing rare and extinct plant species in their natural habitats.
